Hi, I am on the same boat as you. I have been in helpdesk for two years and I am trying to go into network engineering full time.

To answer your question I would say what skills you presently have that you can make a smooth transition to a different position. Take for instance I can move into Network Engineering because I am bascally doing this now only remotely.

Personally, Security you have to know your stuff and how to break a network if you dont know that then I would not even try unless they are willing to train you.

About ten years ago, when I visited many big corporations' IT department, they hired many IT engineers in both software and hardware team. But if they were asked about if there was any people involved in IT security related tasks, the answers were usually none or just one who had other job responsibilities at the same time.

But now, if you visit large multi-national companies, they will usually have three separate IT teams. Apart from the software and hardware team I have just mentioned, there is an additional team for IT security. And the number of people involved in this team is comparable to the hardware and software teams.

So you see, security management is one of the flourishing career path for IT experts.

But bear in mind that the nature of security management is not that concentrated on technical stuff (not like what you will be doing in hardware and software related IT task), you are more likely to handle many IT operations and management issues related to people and company policies' management, etc. So you are more likely to handle more paper work rather than direct dealing with IT setup, etc.

So you need to consider if that nature suits you.

If you are interested, then you should by all means obtain IT certification in this area like CISSP (Certified Information System Security Professional) by ISC2. (http://isc2.org)

Hope this helps!
